It’s March, and you know what that means- prom is just around the corner.  Runner-up to the wedding dress, a prom ensemble is the second most important outfit a girl will ever wear.  With such high expectations,  avoiding the pressure to get the look just right is nearly impossible.  Luckily, Partners in Sound is here with some tips to finding the perfect dress; so sit back, read-on and relax because we’ve got your most important prom detail in the bag.

Step One: Avoid Online Shopping

While it might be tempting to search online for an original dress that no one else will have, it also stands to be very risky too.  For one thing, dress sizes are extremely different; a girl might wear a size 6 jean, but size 2 dress (also, sizes vary with designers).  Between delivery dates and return policies, online shopping is too much to deal with for such a time-sensitive event.

So how can you shop at the mall and ensure your look will not be duplicated on the dance floor?  Just ask the salesperson.  A lot of stores understand the fear of looking like a double-mint twin on prom night, and most instill a policy that (upon request) your dress will not be sold to anyone else who attends your same school.

Step Two: When Shopping, Prep for the Occasion

We are not saying you have to hit the mall with a perfectly quaffed up-do; but some rogue on your cheeks, those favorite earrings that you know you want to wear, and a smile are all items you should bring with you when shopping for a prom dress.  Other must haves: a strapless bra and some heels that are approximate to the height you want to be on your big night.

Step Three: A Budget- Decide Before You Buy

We will admit this is our least favorite step too, but you want to spend your prom night dancing on the clouds, not looking down for some loose change.  A prom dress can easily break the bank, and with all of the excitement of finding the perfect dress, girls can easily forget to match that with the perfect price.  No one is saying you have to stick to your budget like glue, just have an idea on what you would like to spend before you step near any racks.

Prom queen on a budget?  Check out a local consignment shop; prom dresses tend to be only worn once and are usually re-sold in great condition.  Not the second-hand shop type of girl?  Phone your favorite department stores and inquire about any upcoming sales or promotions.

Step Four: Plan to Dress for Your Body Type

Sure it might seem like everyone is wearing mermaid gowns this season, but unless you’ve got a petite, straight frame this look belongs under the sea.  This step is too important to overlook and too simple not to follow:  buy a dress that compliments you, not the pages of a magazine.

To be successful in this step you must be willing to step out of your comfort zone and have an open mind.  Try on ball gowns, halters, long and short lengths.  The more variety of dresses you try on, the better understanding you will gain on what compliments your figure.  And besides—trying on dresses is the fun part!

While limo rentals and corsage arrangements all seem standard for this time-honored event, the one dynamic detail that transcends the rest is the prom dress.  Above all of the rules remember to just have fun.  A prom and all of its processes are a once-in-a lifetime experience where every girls deserves to look and feel like a princess.

Lovers Punch Recipe:  Slice some fresh strawberries, limes and oranges and place them at the bottom of a chilled glass. Thaw a can of frozen raspberry-lemonade.  Pour an even mixture of club soda and sparkling grape juice into your glass and add in some of the lemonade. Add sugar to taste and an optional shot of vodka or clear rum for some extra punch.  Add ice, fresh raspberries and mint sprig for garnish.

4. Mood Lighting

Do yourself a favor, take five minutes and transform your living room into a romantic lounge.  The key is soft lighting, and tea lights are an inexpensive way to make a big impression.  Want to add some ambiance?  Float some of the candles in a large glass bowl or vase filled with water.  Finally, add white twinkling lights or lanterns to create an instant romantic atmosphere right in the comforts of your own home.

A sweet sixteen is a milestone celebration for a wonderful girl who is quickly turning into a beautiful woman.  With so much to celebrate, there must be some guests who deserve special recognition for their impact on the birthday girl’s life.  Enter: the Candle Lighting Ceremony.
